Our Success Stories

Greg Houck

Cars will probably always be a part of Greg Houck’s life. He sells lots of them now. But one car changed his life forever.

Houck was a carefree teenager doing wheelies on his bicycle one day at his home in Neosho, MO. But his wheelies were a little different. They were being done off the hood of a car. His tragic accident left him in a wheelchair.

At 29, Houck, now lives with his wife and two children in Grove, OK. He owns a car dealership. But he has spent a significant amount of time working in the insurance industry helping insurance companies and victims of spinal cord injuries make sure they have proper equipment and useful treatment.

Houck is an aggressive supporter of spinal cord research and technology, and also awareness of spinal cord injuries. "I think that’s where the biggest progress has been made in recent years," he said. "There are many more recoveries now because of initial treatment. People aren’t moved right away. They are stabilized. Everyone is more knowledgeable."

Recent years in Houck’s life have been an absolute whirlwind—-he has experienced tremendous success internationally as a wheelchair athlete, competing for the United States in Germany, Australia and Canada. He has also been active in wheelchair rugby.

Houck still keeps tabs with his friends at Missouri K.I.D.S."They helped me with so much," he said. "Computers, and an air ride for my truck. Things that help make you successful and mobile. And they’ve been so good to anyone I have sent to them. Missouri K.I.D.S. is a rare organization. They are so truthful, so honest and so helpful. And there is very little red tape."

“I am so proud of the good work that Missouri K.I.D.S. has done over the years. This is an organization that doesn't seek a lot of attention for itself. Instead, they quietly go about their business, helping people who have had their lives turned upside down and are facing one crisis after another. Missouri K.I.D.S. is what community service is all about.”
